Austin Rowing Club welcomed over 1,100 athletes to the 27th annual Heart of the Texas Regatta this past weekend on Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas. The event began back in 1983 as a collegiate event, but has since opened to masters, adaptive and junior categories on the seven lane 1,000 meter course. The race offers a early competitive opportunity for crews to test out the competition for the spring season. According to the clubs' press release, athletes represented 15 cities and five states, including big college names such as University of Texas and Oklahoma City University.
The Texas Longhorns women’s crew posted four victories on Saturday to begin their season. The Longhorns took home gold in the women’s open 8+, women’s open 4+, women’s novice 8+ and women’s novice 4+ events. The Texas crew represented the sole Division I team in attendance, and it showed. The Longhorns not only won the women’s novice 4+ and 8+ events, but claimed the top three spots in both.
"The novices raced to all top finishes and did just an superb job today," Head coach Carie Graves told texassports.com. "This was their first competition with racing starts and lanes, proving that they are certainly ready to race and race well in our upcoming 2K season."
Host club Austin Rowing Club made an appearance in almost every event, and claimed victories in many of them. The home team took gold in the women’s masters 8+, women’s junior rec 1x, women’s junior novice 8+, mixed open 8+, men’s junior 1x, to name just a few.
